Many of the families I photograph on the Cape are here on vacation, and some come back every year. A session takes about an hour.
Come for the last hour of light
The hour before sunset is soft on faces and nobody squints. In summer that means a session after an early dinner. Check the sunset for your date.
What to wear
- Choose two or three colors that sit well together, and let each person wear them differently.
- Skip big logos and busy prints.
- Bare feet work on the sand, so plan shoes you can leave behind.
Children, and everyone else
You do not need to keep anyone still. We play, we run and we photograph what happens. Large groups are welcome too. As Christian Tiedemann wrote about his family, Ewerton "expertly handled our unruly group of 16 (ranging in age from 4 to 80!)".
Where to go
Millway Beach, Barnstable

Open sand and a wide sky, with plenty of room to jump. See The Emmi family.
Paines Creek Beach, Brewster

Rocks along the water make a strong silhouette at sunset. See The Hicks family.
Brant Point Lighthouse, Nantucket

A good choice if your family is staying on the island. See The Nolans family.
Armstrong-Kelley Park, Osterville

A green park for a day when the beach is too windy. See The Lebrancs family.
